About the UMF Honey Association
The UMF Honey Association oversees all use of the UMF quality trademark and supports licensees and consumers through a number of programmes and activities.
We appoint independent auditors to regularly check and analyse samples from the marketplace. This helps protect consumers from counterfeit products.
INTERNATIONAL STANDARDISED TESTING
We have a programme of standardised testing in place across all territories where UMF Mānuka honey products are sold.
We continue to invest heavily in industry leading scientific research of Mānuka honey, as a way of future-proofing the industry.
1995Waikato-based honey producer Margaret Bennett meets with New Zealand trade Enterprise (TRADENZ) officials seeking advice on how to identify and differentiate the unique properties of Mānuka Honey.
1997Meetings are held with TRADENZ officials, attended by interested parties including producers, marketers and researchers.
A dedicated industry group is formed called the Active Mānuka Honey Industry Group (AMHIG).
A steering committee is appointed to investigate a name for the unique properties found in Mānuka honey and to establish industry standards.
The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) quality trademark is developed.
1998The registered trademark UMF is formally unveiled at a beekeeper’s field-day event at Paengaroa in the Bay of Plenty.
AMHIG becomes an incorporated society known as the Active Mānuka Honey Association (AMHA)
Beekeepers contribute funds to help fund the protection, research and promotion of the UMF brand.
The UMF quality trademark is launched and successfully defended legally.
