Protecting the term ‘Mānuka honey’ for New Zealand

For over 80 years, consumers have understood that Mānuka produces an extraordinary honey with unique qualities and attributes, and that it comes from New Zealand.

New Zealand has always been at the forefront of research, production and promotion of Mānuka honey. Local researchers pioneered the most efficient methods for collecting Mānuka nectar and testing for its unique signature compounds. The word ‘Mānuka’ comes directly from Māori and has deep cultural and spiritual significance for Māori people. All of these factors have collectively reinforced amongst consumers that Mānuka honey is an iconic New Zealand product.
