Upon reviewing the data for the methylglyoxal concentrations by the derivatisation method (Table 2), we find that we have failed to apply a multiplication factor of 1.87 to take account of the dilution caused by addition of the derivatisation agent to the honey solution and an adjustment for the density of the methylglyoxal solution. Thus all data in the column of Table 2 should be multiplied by 1.87. This has the effect of increasing the difference between the direct (HPLC) data and the data from the derivatisation method especially at higher UMF values. This may relate in part to the deviation from linearity of the standard curve for the derivatisation method above 800 mg/k.
