Active Manuka Honey Association (AMHA)

Purpose:

"To develop and maintain the UMF® Trademark as representing products for superior antibacterial applications"

The trademark UMF® is a quality mark that represents the testing of the non-peroxide activity in honey using various test methods. Underpinning this, AMHA uses a range of biological and chemical methods and the approved testing laboratories are accredited and have international standing and recognition.

In order to carry out the Purpose AMHA has these specific responsibilities:

  • To effectively and efficiently manage the UMF® trademark
  • To maintain the trademark for the benefit of the New Zealand Beekeeping Industry
  • To allocate any funds received from the trademark into the following areas:
    • - Administration
    • - Research
    • - Marketing
  • To develop international recognition of the trademark
  • To protect and maintain the commercial equity of the trademark and license users thereof
  • To manage and validate production standards that support the quality production of UMF® honey
  • To actively promote research into the benefits and efficacy of UMF® honey.
  • To apply for funds to meet the above objectives

UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor) is the registered name and trademark of the Active Manuka Honey Association (AMHA) and can be used only by UMF® licensed users who meet set criteria which include regular monitoring and auditing of the quality of their honey.

UMF® Manuka Honey from a New Zealand company licensed to use the name UMF, and labelled in the licensee's name, is the only honey guaranteed to have the special UMF® healing property and be of the same quality as that referred to in the research.
